Bill Newman

Bill Newman

Assassination Witness

A witness of JFK's assassination, he was standing, along with his wife and two children, on the northern side of Elm Street, just in front of Abraham Zapruder. They even thought, at first, that Zapruder might have shot at the President.

When the shots rang out, the whole family lay down on the grass, so their picture became famous thanks to many photographers, like Art Rickerby from Life Magazine.

Answering to a TV interview right after the assassination, Bill Newman said that he thought the shot came from the top of the "knoll", or "mall". Some think he has given its name to the famous "Grassy Knoll", but it seems than reporter Merriman Smith has done it (see The Man Who Named the Grassy Knoll).

Later, he was to be a prosecution witness during Clay Shaw's trial, in New Orleans.
