Merriman Smith

Birthdate: February 10, 1913 - Death: Monday April 13, 1970

A UPI press agency journalist, he was riding in the presidential motorcade and was the first one to announce the attack against President Kennedy.

Of all the journalists riding in the press service car, he was the closest to the radio-telephone and grabbed it while the car was still on Elm St.

Thus he told his Dallas agency : 'Three shots were fired on President on President Kennedy's motorcade in downtown Dallas'. This first bulletin appeared on UPI telescriptors as soon as 12.34 p.m. Thinking the shots came from an automatic weapon, his second message told of a 'burst'.

Merriman Smith did all he could to have his AP agency rival, Jack Bell, stay away from the only radio-telephone in the car.
